25} SEASONAL6_INTRO
Does winter weather get you down? Some people experience a serious mood change during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. Its a type of depression -- called seasonal affective disorder. And it impacts more people than you might think. Judy Simpson takes a look.
26} SEASONAL6_PKG
Winter is not Ann Zuccardy's favorite time of year. ((00:01:43:00 Ann Zuccardy: "there are the people who tell me that I should learn to embrace winter and the truth of the matter is I don't. I live in Vermont and I really don't embrace winter for me it is not a matter of embracing winter for me it is a matter of getting through it and coping the best I can." 00:02:01:01)) Ann has been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder.or SAD ((00:00:39:12 Ann Zuccardy: " I notice it typically starts with me around December, January I feel very lethargic anxious a little bit depressed just yearning for sunshine and being outdoors." 00:00:53:17)) SAD is a form of depression brought on by the lack of daylight in the winter months. A depression that lifts once spring weather arrives and daylight lasts longer. Symptoms can include losing interest in things, low energy, sleeping more,,eating more and low self esteem. And while Ann has suffered with SAD for more than a decade, she was just recently diagnosed by her doctor. ((0:04:25:10 "Yes! to know that it is a real issue a real disorder that i am not imagining it ,, yes" 00:04:33:14)) Following her doctor's advice -- Ann now sticks to strict sleep schedule, diet and exercise program and also takes vitamin D. ((JS SU 00:42:43:01 Judy Simpson: "A study is underway at UVM to check possible treatments for SAD. It tests the traditional light therapy and then something called cognitive behavioral therapy.")) ((00:27:23:08 Prof Kelly Rohan/ UVM Psychology Dept. "Light therapy involves sitting in front of a fixture that produces bright light similar to the light that would come at sunrise on a clear day very intensely bright light and you would sit in front of the fixture for at least 30 minutes every day upon waking. 00:27:38:11 Cognitive BT is a kind of talk therapy so it would involve working with a therapist to try to develop more helpful ways of thinking and behaving at times of depression in the winter specifically for SAD patients."" 00:27:52:19)) And there are alot of SAD patients in Vermont. ((00:26:08:15 Kelly again " in the US the further away from the equator you get the more cases of SAD you would find and BUrlington is about 45 degrees north latitude so there are not many states that go above that." 00:26:20:16)) 160 people have taken part in this three year study. Now the followup begins. Tracking these folks over consecutive winters to see which therapy is most successful. ((00:29:10:30 Prof Kelly Rohan/ UVM Psychology Dept. We hypothesize that people treated with CBT do better in the next winter and two winters out than people treated with light therapy because in that kind of therapy we teach skills to cope with the winters so those in theory will carry forward in the future after the treatment ends. "00:29:32:25)) Ann is not taking part in the study and is not getting talk therapy. But she agrees with professor Rohan - that if you think you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder it is important not to ignore symptoms. ((00:04:00:04 Ann again "You are not crazy, there has been a lot of research done on the disorder it is a real disorder a real issue .")) And now another possible treatment for this seasonal disorder. JS Ch 3 news Burlington.

33} BURLINGTONAM_PKG
Dozens packed into city hall Monday night to get a glimpse of the future. These drawings show what Burlington could look like in 21-12. Planners say they rarely even get to look years ahead. (( 23:07 - :13 David White - BTV Planning and Zoning "it's been really exciting to actually be able to do that, we spend so much time and energy looking at the immediate")) (nat pop) Over the last week, hundreds of residents brought forward ideas for a Better Burlington (this idea may be crazy nat pop) Consultants incorporated those ideas and displayed a series of proposals... Big and small. ((21:51 - 55 - David White the consultants did an amazing job of capturing all of the various ideas)) In just a few years, residents could see greener streets, a duck pond and ice rink on the waterfront, and lots of benches too short for snoozing on Church St. Other ideas won't be possible for decades: - a dug-out parking garage near the waterfront accessible from Battery street - a colossal year-round farmer's market could cover the current parking lot - and the Town Center mall may be scrapped - divided by new grid streets much like the ones it replaced. ((27:17 - :26 Ross Nizlek - Burlington Resident "some of those we might have to tweak... But I think in general I was very impressed with 90% of what they put out")) ((29:17 - :27 Linda Tierney - Burlington Resident "as Burlingtonians, I think we've gotten used to some spaces that are not all that attractive, that I would like to see some of the ideas implemented that they presented." )) City staff say now they'll take theses illustrations and develop a master-plan to present to the city council this spring. ((24:28 - :33 these are all things that we've been talking about for a long time, but we're finally actually stitching them all together)) Even in a century, it's doubtful the Burlington canvas will ever be complete. A facelift for Burlington's bike path -- comes with a big pricetag. Flooding last spring caused serious damage to the path -- just as the city was looking at how to improve it. Early estimates show repairs and changes will likely cost between 12 and nearly 17 million dollars. A finalized plan is expected to be ready for city council-consideration -- in late February. The city could get federal grants to offset some of the cost.

Welcome back. This may be the last day of January -- but a lot of folks are already looking ahead to summer. And believe it or not -- you should be -- at least if you want to send your kid to summer camp. But how do you know if your child is ready? Joining me this morning with some advice is Kate Laddison with Kids Vermont - a monthly magazine published by Seven days. Good morning. Q. Well how do you know if your kid is ready for camp? A. Do they want to go? Are they expressing interest, or is this something that mom or dad wants to push? A. Can they overnight away from home? Have they done sleepovers with friends, family, school trips, church groups? They should definitely practice this before they go to camp. You don't want to sign them up for a three week session unless you're reasonably certain they'll enjoy it. That's the point, right? Do they have some basic self-help skills? They'll need to keep track of their stuff, and decide things like what kind of activity they want to do. You can help them practice at home. Lucy Norvell from the American Camp Association of New England suggests that kids practice putting clothes in drawers, separating dirty laundry from clean, hanging up wet towels. You can also give them choices -- do you want to shower before dinner or after? This can be really empowering for them. But remember that camps are set up to help teach kids these skills. Keagan....
